The U.S. administration recently announced new customs rules that significantly change how shipments to the U.S. are handled.

Here’s what you need to know:

End of de minimis exemption

  • As of May 2, 2025, packages under US$800 from China, Hong Kong, or Macau are no longer exempt from customs duty.
  • They will be subject to 30% duty or a flat fee of US$25 per item ($50 as of June 1).

Formal entry from US$800

All shipments valued at over US$800 (previously $2,500), regardless of origin, now require:

  • A complete customs declaration,
  • The consignee’s tax number (SSN or EIN),
  • A precise indication of the country of origin.

What this means for you:

  • No more formalities to deal with, even for small shipments.
  • Customs duties applicable to a greater number of shipments.
  • Potential delays, especially for shipments to private customers.
