Meishan container port terminal, one of the major terminal at the Port of Ningbo in China, was shut down indefinitely on Wednesday due to a worker being tested positive to Covid-19.

The terminal’s closure began at 3:30 a.m. local time on Wednesday, August 11th. The shutdown not only affects the berthing of ships, it also means that equipment cannot be picked up and goods cannot be dropped off.

For now, the rest of the Ningbo port remains operational, but the shutdown could cause significant problems for container movement in this area that is critical for shipping. Disruptions and congestion are expected at nearby ports as carriers seek alternatives by rearranging cargo to other terminals and diverting ships from Ningbo to Shanghai.
