The American Transport Research Institute (ATRI) analyzed more than 300 problematic road sections in major cities across the United States. A list of the 10 heaviest traffic locations during rush hour was compiled.

Since 2002, ATRI has been developing and monitoring a series of key performance measures on the U.S. freight transportation system, including collecting GPS data from freight trucks. This provides a better understanding of roadway issues and where and at what level investments need to be made to improve the situation.

Benchmarking confirms that overall traffic conditions in the U.S. have deteriorated in 2022, compared to previous years. This may be due in part to the post-pandemic return to work and the increase in the vehicle fleet.
