Diwali, or Dipawali, is the largest and most important festival and holiday of the year in India. This holiday takes its name from the row (avali) of clay lamps (deepa) that Indians light outside their homes to symbolize the inner light that protects against spiritual darkness. Diwali is celebrated for five days and people spend time with their loved ones, exchanging gifts, eating and praying. This year, Diwali is on November 4th, 2021, but there are celebrations from November 2 through November 6.

Along with family get-togethers, Diwali is the festival of lights and marks the time when millions of Hindus, Sikhs and Jains around the world celebrate the triumph of good over evil with beautiful rituals such as festive lights, fireworks and sweet foods. Every religion has a unique history and historical event for Diwali and this holiday is celebrated differently from one region to another in India.
