What questions does a company ask itself before an international shipment between Brazil and Canada?

This is a shipment where goods are picked up in a country (e.g. Canada) and must be shipped to its neighbouring country across its borders (e.g. the United States).

On the other hand, an international shipment is a shipment where goods are picked up in a country (e.g. Canada) that must be delivered to a country other than the United States (e.g. Brazil).

A truckload means that you have enough stock to fill a transport trailer. However, a partial shipment that you would like to send in a dedicated way can also be a full load.

A full load (or truckload) is more expensive than a partial load. Your loading selection must be made according to your logistical needs.

Unlike a truckload, less-than truckload means that you do not have enough stock to fill a transport trailer. Normally, several partial loads from different companies are consolidated into a single transport trailer.

This type of loading must often stop along the way to make several pick-ups and/or shipments. This is why transit times are only approximate and therefore never guaranteed.

This is a shipment in which a consolidator groups several orders from different shippers into a single shipment to an agent located at any destination.

The main advantage is that it offers preferential rates to all shippers who are part of the same shipment.

It is an international trade document that confirms that the goods have been fully obtained, produced, manufactured or processed in a specific country. This is mandatory for international transactions.

It is a customs declaration submitted by an entity that is exporting goods across international borders.

This document must state the buyer and seller, indicate the date and terms of sale, the quantity, weight and/or volume of the shipment, type of packaging, complete description of goods, unit value and total value and insurance, shipping and other charges.

The CBSA strongly advises that you keep records of all the paperwork, either electronically or in paper format, of the goods you ship from and to Canada six years following your shipment (quant. That includes a record of the quantities received, the price paid, the country of origin, vendor, product and any other relevant information.

It is the Canadian Border Services Agency. In other words, it is the Canadian customs.

It stands for the harmonized commodity description and coding system comprised of about 5,000 commodity groups, each identified by a 6-digit code and arranged in a legal and logical structure and supported by well-defined rules to achieve uniform classification.

  1. A description of what you are shipping and the commercial value of each product
  2. The reason you are shipping these goods to and/or from Canada
  3. The 10-digit tariff classification number for each product you import and/or export and report the rate of duty for your goods
  4. The method of shipping
  5. Other possible information

Transportation to and/or from Canada is not subject to federal and regional sales taxes. However, services, distribution and storage are taxable.

Yes! A customs broker is a company authorized by an importer’s government and engaged in clearing goods through customs.

It is a binding contract for the receipt of goods delivered to the transportation provider for a shipment.

This document contains a description of the goods, the origin and destination as well as the trucking company’s name. It also turns into a proof of shipment once the goods are signed for and received by the consignee.

The importer of record is normally billed by his customs broker for duties and taxes.

The customs broker is responsible for determining duties and taxes, then reports those taxes to customs on behalf of his client.

The trucking industry offers a maximum coverage of $2.00/lb. The industry of sea transport is governed by the Carriage of Goods by Sea Act (COGSA).

The maritime carrier’s liability limit is normally limited to $500.00 per package, also known as the customary freight unit, which may refer to the container in which your cargo is loaded. At the level of air transport, the limit of liability for air transport is normally limited to 19 SDR/kg.

However, an individual cargo insurance certificate is always available on request if you wish to insure your goods more adequately. The limits of liability are provided for information purposes only and may change at any time.

These charges are based on several factors: the quantity, dimensions, total weight, origin, destination, commodity description and the type of transportation service required. Some additional factors may apply depending on your request.
